Unit 7 · Magnetism & Electromagnetism

The Motor Effect & Fleming's Left-Hand Rule [Higher Tier]

2 min read · part of the full Exam Guide

The motor effect

  • When a conductor carrying a current is placed in a magnetic field, the magnet producing the field and the conductor exert a force on each other. This is the motor effect
  • The two magnetic fields (from the magnet and from the current in the wire) interact, producing a force on the wire that pushes it out of the field
  • The force is largest when the wire is at right angles to the field and zero when it is parallel to the field
