Half-life
Radioactive decay is random , but with a large number of nuclei the
overall rate is predictable
The half-life of a radioactive isotope is the time it takes for the
number of nuclei in a sample to halve , or the time for the count
rate (or activity) to fall to half its initial level
After one half-life half the original nuclei remain; after two, a quarter;
after three, an eighth. The activity halves the same way
Finding a half-life from a graph: read the time for the activity to fall
from any value to half of it. Check with a second pair of values
Worked example: a source's count rate falls from 800 to 100 counts per
second in 24 hours. 800 → 400 → 200 → 100 800 \rightarrow 400 \rightarrow 200 \rightarrow 100 800 → 400 → 200 → 100 is
three half-lives , so the half-life is 8 hours
(HT) Net decline as a ratio : after n n n half-lives the activity is
( 1 2 ) n \left(\tfrac{1}{2}\right)^n ( 2 1 ) n of the original. After 3 half-lives it is
1 8 \frac{1}{8} 8 1 , so the ratio of remaining to original is 1 : 8, and the
fraction that has decayed is 7 8 \frac{7}{8} 8 7
Activity from a decay curve: the activity at a time is the gradient of the
tangent to the graph of number of nuclei against time, in Bq

Half-life time (days) activity (counts per second) 800 400 6 200 12 100 18 one half-life one half-life one half-life The half-life is the time it takes for the number of undecayed nuclei — and so the activity — to HALVE. It is always the same length of time, whatever the activity has fallen to: 800 → 400 → 200 → 100 Radioactive decay is RANDOM: you cannot say which nucleus will decay next, or when. But with huge numbers of nuclei the average behaviour is completely predictable. Activity is measured in becquerels (Bq) — decays per second. A short half-life means the source decays away quickly, so it is very active but not for long. A long half-life means it stays hazardous for a very long time — which is the problem with nuclear waste. A decay curve of activity against time, with the halving from 800 to 400 to 200 marked and the equal time intervals shown as the half-life
Give the half-life definition with its quantity : time for the
activity , count rate or number of nuclei to halve.
"Time for the radioactivity to halve" is not credited
If a quarter remains, two half-lives have passed. Write "2
half-lives", then multiply by the half-life to get the time. And activity
is in becquerels , not sieverts and not "decays per second"
The link to randomness: each nucleus has the same probability of
decaying in a given time, so with many nuclei, half will have decayed
after one half-life
